Richard of Chichester

Richard of Chichester
(c. 1197–1253)
   Saint and Bishop.
Richard was born in Droitwich, England. He was appointed Chancellor of Oxford in c. 1235 and later of Canterbury. In 1244 he was chosen to be Bishop of Chichester, but he had to be consecrated in France because King Henry III preferred another candidate. The King only withdrew his opposition after being threatened with excommunication. Richard proved to be an excellent Bishop and, after his death, his tomb quickly became a place of pilgrimage.
